:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dave Ryan -- Fun with a side of wisdom : This is a quick, fun read that one can pick up whenever there's a free moment. It's a funny look at the various types of restaurant staff and restaurant customers, and how egos and conflicting personalities can make or break the dining experience. The narrator is not afraid to admit that he has walked in the shoes of a few of the negative stereotypes--the aloof waiter, for instance. But he's just as willing to make fun of himself as the characters he portrays, and ultimately goes on to share some universal wisdom regarding humility that he learned along the way. The honest, self-deprecating humor peppered throughout makes the book easy to relate to. There's a point in this book regarding the utility one can derive from setting ego aside, and it is conveyed in a fun, non-preachy way. After a fast, funny read, a few lessons remain that apply not only in restaurants, but in almost any profession and in life generally. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nicklaus Suino -- I enjoyed every page! : I really enjoyed this book. It gave me a lens to see inside the world of waiting tables that I didn't have. Ian Gray writes in a unique, compelling voice, and shares stories of the dysfunctional family of wait-people that alternatively make you laugh, scoff, curse, and shake your head in astonishment. Whether you read through it in one sitting, or just grab a chapter with your latte and scone (as the "Coffee Break Edition" header suggests), you'll enjoy every page of Why Wait.
