  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Vassilios Damiras -- History of Eastern Europe : This book examines and analyzes the evolution of Eastern Europe, including Ukraine and Russia. It focuses on the socio-political aspects of the region and how other regional powers and empires played a role in shaping that region, such as the Ottoman Empire, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and later Germany under Hitler and the Soviet Union. Many tribes crossed Eastern Europe and settled in Western Europe, and the Balkans became an area of different nationalities under the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. Also, that region became the gateway to Europe. The Carpathian plain was another region that faced tribe activity and movement. Eastern Europe was very diverse, thus having a convoluted history. Overall, this book adds vital historical information regarding the historical evolution of Eastern Europe. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jill -- A Captivating Introduction to the History of my Ancestors : As a Polish-American/Slovak-American this text was a quick and captivating summary of the history of my family's homeland. It encapsulated how a collection of religious and culturally diverse group of tribes not only shaped their western European neighbors. They also served as both a buffer zone and resource-rich environment to be exploited. This text particularly focuses on how homogeneous empires surrounding them impacted the see-saw that was conditional independence and, conversely, foreign occupation. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JJares -- A Tremendous Amount of History Crammed in These 366 Pages : A special thank you goes to whoever insisted on all of the maps for this book about Eastern Europe. Because many Americans are not as familiar with the countries of Eastern Europe, the maps were critical to understanding what was going on. Sit back and be prepared to be surprised by the amazing history of Eastern Europe -- they were part of nearly continuous migrations and fights over valuable trade routes. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Val A. Balagot -- History of the Lesser-known Europe : Modern Eastern Europe was shaped by a series of empires that came and went: Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Napoleon. Alliances among the Balkans were made, broken, and modified according to the whims of other meddling nations such as Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary, each of who attempted to shape Eastern Europe to suit their interests. Borders constantly shifted, redrawn by alliances formed and broken, revolutions and counter-revolutions, and meddling Western European superpowers. This period also was witness to the Great War and the rise of Communism. Thankfully, this book has numerous maps and photos illustrating the what's-what and who's who of this turbulent period of European history. If you're a student of European history, add this book to your reading list. You will be captivated. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael States -- An underappreciated region : Eastern Europe is considered to be the region between Western Europe and Asia and its construct is based on Western Europe's consideration that it is more politically and culturally evolved than its neighbors and the definition of Eastern Europe is more of a metaphoric border than an official legal or political definition. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gary Barbero -- Excellent Reading This book provides the reader with a thorough history of a region in the world that in some cases still suffers an identity crisis. History of many peoples and some how of them have blended identities that will never change….. : Provides the reader with a thorough history of this part of the world, and the continuing search for identity that some may never achieve…… ( Reviewed in Canada on October 27, 2021 )
